Updated 31 August 2026. RSPCA Pet Insurance’s 6 July 2026 heatstroke explainer is the dated refresh for RSPCA heatstroke dogs grooming questions: heavy panting, bright or very pale gums, staggering, vomiting, collapse. The same emergency signs sit on the RSPCA Knowledgebase. We are citing the July article, not selling a policy. Heatstroke is a vet job.

By the Dog Grooming Australia Team.

Why this is on a grooming site

Owners sometimes book a hydrobath “to cool the dog down” on a 38°C afternoon. A dryer and a closed van can push temperature the wrong way. If the dog is already distressed, you need a vet, not a teddy clip. The Knowledgebase is species-wide (caged animals, fish, reptiles). Dogs on a grooming table are the slice we cover.

January’s Victorian inspectorate spike is a separate dated snapshot: RSPCA Victoria heat reports. The July piece is the national signpost list. Don’t mix them into one panic post.

What to do instead of improvising

Shift the groom. Offer water. Don’t walk on hot concrete. If signs match the RSPCA list, phone a vet. Standing coat guides: how often to groom, hydrobath, locations, news.

We will not tell you to ice-bath a collapsing dog from a blog. That is why the Knowledgebase says seek veterinary attention immediately. Phone the clinic. Don’t wait for a dryer cycle to finish.

What a groomer can and cannot do in a heatwave

A competent salon can shift your slot, skip a high-heat dryer, and refuse a double coat at 2pm. They cannot treat heatstroke. If the dog is already staggering in the car park, go to a vet. Don’t “drop in for a cool hydrobath” as a workaround. January’s Victorian inspectorate numbers are a separate snapshot. July’s article is the sign list. Keep them as two URLs.

Double coats still need undercoat work on a cooler day, not a shaved-to-the-skin panic clip because the forecast hit 38°C. Ask the groomer what they will actually do. If the answer is “we’ll just take it short”, that is a skin-risk conversation, not a heatstroke treatment. A teddy clip does not replace shade, water, or a vet if the dog is already staggering.
