Dog Coat Matting Severity & Shave Risk Assessment
Check if your dog's knots can be safely brushed out or if groomers will require a welfare shave-down. Evaluate pelt severity, comb test results, extra dematting costs, and health risks.
Assess Knot Severity & Shave Risk
Select your dog's coat type, the result of your comb test, and recent bathing history to check the recommended grooming approach.
Australian Dematting Guidelines
What is the 15-minute dematting limit?
Most professional Australian grooming salons enforce a strict 15-minute maximum brush-out rule. If knots cannot be gently separated within 15 minutes without distress to the dog, ethical practice requires clipping the matted section away.
Why does shaving cost more than a normal haircut?
Clipping underneath dense mats requires surgical precision close to sensitive skin, risking clipper burns and nicking skin folds. It severely dulls expensive clipper blades and requires double the technician time and disinfectant care.
How can I prevent matting from returning after a shave?
Start line-brushing with a long-pin slicker brush and metal comb as soon as the coat grows to 1 cm. Never let your dog air dry after swimming in Australian rivers or beaches without brushing them completely dry.
