Tasmania’s 2026 Dog Welfare Rules: Check Waiting and Crate Arrangements

Tasmania’s Animal Welfare (Dogs) Regulations 2026 took effect on 19 August, with provisions covering the care and confinement of dogs. For owners booking a groom, they are a reason to ask how the dog will wait before and after the hands-on appointment. They should not be described as a new national groomer-licensing scheme.

What the crate provision says
Regulation 16 of the Tasmanian regulations addresses crating. It requires acceptance of confinement without distress and enough room for specified normal positions, including turning around and lying on the side with legs extended. It also limits confinement to a total of 10 hours within a continuous 24-hour period, with an exception for confinement in accordance with veterinary advice for that dog.
The official legislative history records commencement on 19 August 2026. Legislation and department guidance checked 4 October 2026. The regulations apply in Tasmania and cover more than grooming businesses. Read the actual provision when assessing a particular arrangement. A maximum legal limit should not be treated as a recommended duration for an ordinary grooming visit.
Ask about the whole visit
When booking, ask where the dog waits, who supervises it, and how the salon responds if it becomes distressed. Clarify whether the quoted appointment time means the grooming time or the full drop-off-to-collection period. Those are different questions, particularly if you are fitting the visit around work and cannot return immediately.
The RSPCA’s grooming guidance recommends pleasant, gradual handling and stopping when a dog becomes uncomfortable or stressed. Tell the groomer about known difficulties before the appointment. Our anxious-dog guide provides more questions for that conversation.
Get a plan for an unsettled dog
Agree on how the salon will contact you if the dog isn’t coping and what happens if the groom cannot be completed. Provide a reachable number and an alternative contact where needed. If you know your dog struggles with confinement, say so at booking rather than hoping the problem won’t arise.
You can find local groomers and ask about their arrangements directly. A website photograph cannot tell you how a particular dog will be handled on the day. This is a dated report on Tasmania’s rules; other states and territories require their own checks. Further updates are in dog grooming news.
