PIAA Membership Year Resets 1 July as Grooming Code Talk Continues

The PIAA membership year July 2026 resets on 1 July, covering groomers, boarding operators, retailers, and breeders while the association keeps consulting governments on updated grooming codes of practice. Updated 2 July 2026.

PIAA’s April 2026 member prospectus states the association year runs 1 July to 30 June, with digital certificates and member logos for businesses that meet sector standards. The 2025 grooming survey reported 76% of respondents support mandatory animal care qualifications for new entrants. July is admin. Policy work does not pause for the certificate reprint.

What the prospectus says PIAA did, and will do

The document lists 2024–25 input into companion animal and welfare act reviews across NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Queensland. Grooming director Joanne Marden told news.com.au in June that PIAA is updating grooming codes and consulting state governments on qualifications after WA footage sparked national debate.

PIAA sells membership as a consumer trust signal in a trade where anyone can hang a shingle. Members get policy updates before rule changes hit the floor. That’s useful. It is still not a licence.

Why 1 July matters to a booking, slightly

Ask whether a salon is a current-year PIAA member, not whether they were once. A lapsed logo on a 2024 flyer is not this year’s code access. Membership does not guarantee a calm groom. Dates already on the industry wall

PIAA AusGroom ran 6–8 March 2026 in Melbourne. Pup Cup Coffs Harbour follows 10–12 July. AusPet Expo is booked for Sydney in early September. Expect autumn state budget submissions to mention grooming training while WA investigations continue. None of those events replace a stop policy on your dog’s next visit.

So treat the membership year as a reminder to check the logo date, then still watch the table. Don’t skip the clip because a PDF year rolled over.

What owners can ignore, and what they shouldn’t

Ignore “we’re professional” with no detail. Don’t ignore a salon that can show a current certificate, a written refusal rule, and who is on the tools. If a business cannot say whether they renewed after 1 July, that’s a small question with a yes-or-no answer. Get it before you pay a deposit.
